FAQs
Beginning Therapy
-
Getting started is simple. You can contact us through our website or by calling 313-710-1768. From there, we'll schedule an initial intake appointment where we'll take the time to understand your concerns, answer any questions you may have, and discuss what you're hoping to gain from therapy.
Based on your goals, preferences, scheduling needs, insurance coverage, and clinician availability, we'll recommend the therapist and treatment approach we believe are the best fit for you. If you have a preference for a particular therapist, we'll always do our best to accommodate that request whenever possible.

Beginning therapy can feel intimidating, especially if it's your first experience. Many people worry they won't know what to say or wonder whether their concerns are "serious enough" to seek help. These feelings are completely normal.
Your first appointment is simply an opportunity to begin getting to know your therapist. Together, you'll discuss what's been going on in your life, what brought you to therapy, and what you're hoping to accomplish. There is no right or wrong way to begin, and you don't need to have everything figured out before your first session.

Decades of research have consistently demonstrated that psychotherapy can be highly effective in improving emotional well-being and reducing psychological distress. At the same time, therapy is not a one-size-fits-all process. Every individual brings a unique history, personality, and set of goals to treatment, so the pace of change naturally varies from person to person.
Some people experience meaningful improvement within a relatively short period of time, while others choose to remain in therapy for months or years as they continue to deepen their understanding of themselves and their relationships. Ultimately, you are always in control of how long you remain in treatment, and your therapist will work collaboratively with you to determine the approach that best meets your needs.
-
Many of our patients have participated in therapy before. There are many reasons why previous therapy may not have produced the results you were hoping for. Sometimes the relationship with the therapist wasn't the right fit. In other cases, the treatment approach may not have fully addressed the underlying factors contributing to your difficulties.
Our approach emphasizes developing a deeper understanding of the emotional patterns, relationships, and unconscious processes that shape your experiences. While no treatment can guarantee specific outcomes, many people find this depth-oriented approach to be different from what they have experienced in previous therapy.
-
The frequency of therapy depends on your individual needs, goals, and the treatment approach that is recommended. Most patients participating in psychoanalytic psychotherapy meet once or twice per week, while psychoanalysis traditionally involves meeting four to five times per week. During your initial consultation, your therapist will discuss what schedule is most appropriate for you.
-
Absolutely. If there is a particular therapist you are interested in working with, we will always do our best to accommodate your request whenever possible. If you're unsure who would be the best fit, we'll take the time to understand your concerns, preferences, scheduling needs, insurance coverage, and clinician availability before making a recommendation.

Yes. Working Through Therapy Group offers both in-person psychotherapy and secure, HIPAA-compliant teletherapy for adults throughout the state of Michigan. During your initial conversation, we'll help determine which option best fits your needs and circumstances.
-
Confidentiality is a cornerstone of psychotherapy. Information discussed during your sessions is kept private except in specific situations required by law, such as concerns involving imminent risk of harm, suspected abuse or neglect of a child or vulnerable adult, or when disclosure is otherwise legally mandated. Your therapist will review confidentiality and its legal limits with you during your first appointment so you understand exactly how your information is protected.
