ABOUT OUR FARMINGTON HILLS PSYCHOANALYTIC GROUP
Working Through Therapy Group was founded on the belief that meaningful psychological change takes time, curiosity, and a willingness to understand ourselves more deeply. The practice was established by Mead Goedert as a place where therapists could provide thoughtful, in-depth treatment to individuals experiencing emotional suffering. Our goal is to create an environment where patients feel genuinely understood and where therapy is approached not simply as symptom reduction, but as an opportunity for lasting personal growth.
Today, mental health care is more accessible than ever before. This is an important and positive development, allowing more people to seek help when they need it. At the same time, many individuals come to therapy hoping not only to feel better in the moment, but also to understand why they continue to struggle with the same emotional pain, relationship patterns, or internal conflicts despite their best efforts to change.
At Working Through Therapy Group, we believe that emotional difficulties are often more complex than they first appear. Depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, trauma, and other forms of emotional suffering are rarely random or isolated experiences. They are often shaped by years of relationships, life experiences, and ways of adapting to the world. By taking the time to understand these deeper patterns, therapy can become more than a source of temporary relief—it can become a process of creating meaningful and enduring change.
Our Approach To Care
People often come to therapy after spending years trying to overcome emotional difficulties on their own. They may have read books, listened to podcasts, practiced coping skills, received advice from others, or even participated in previous therapy. While these efforts can be helpful, many people find themselves returning to the same painful feelings, relationship struggles, or self-defeating patterns despite sincerely wanting things to be different.
Our approach begins with the belief that these patterns are not signs of weakness or lack of motivation. Rather, they often represent understandable ways of adapting to earlier experiences, relationships, and emotional challenges. What once helped us cope can, over time, begin to limit us in ways we no longer recognize.
Instead of focusing only on reducing symptoms, we work collaboratively to understand the emotional and relational patterns that lie beneath them. As these patterns become clearer, patients often develop greater freedom to respond to themselves and others in new ways. Our goal is not simply to help people manage distress, but to help them create lasting change by understanding themselves more fully.
What does “Working Through” mean?
Why did we name our practice Working Through Therapy Group? Because we believe the name captures one of the most important truths about psychological change: meaningful growth is usually a gradual process rather than a single breakthrough. Insight is often the beginning of change rather than the end of it. While recognizing a pattern can be an important first step, understanding ourselves intellectually is often very different from living and responding in new ways.
Many of the ways we think, feel, relate to others, and protect ourselves developed gradually through our life experiences and relationships. Over time, these patterns become deeply ingrained and often operate outside of our awareness. Even when they no longer serve us, they can be surprisingly difficult to change because they have become familiar ways of navigating the world.
In therapy, this often means returning to familiar feelings, conflicts, and relationship patterns more than once. Rather than indicating that therapy has stalled, these moments are often where the deepest work occurs. As these experiences are explored from new perspectives and understood within the safety of a consistent therapeutic relationship, they gradually become less automatic and more open to change.
Psychoanalysts have long referred to this gradual process as working through, and it is the philosophy that inspired the name of our practice. We believe that lasting change is possible when people are given the time, support, and opportunity to better understand themselves and work through the emotional patterns that have shaped their lives.

Our Goal
Our goal is not simply to help people feel better in the moment, but to help them understand themselves more fully so that meaningful and lasting change becomes possible. We strive to help our patients develop greater freedom in how they experience themselves, relate to others, and respond to life's challenges.
We recognize that beginning therapy requires courage, and we consider it a privilege to be invited into such an important part of a person's life. Whether someone is struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, trauma, grief, or simply feeling stuck, our hope is that therapy becomes a place where they feel genuinely understood, challenged with compassion, and supported in creating a life that feels more authentic and fulfilling.
